Although deaf & blind, through touching the hand movement he understood the Scripture; "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Suroe communicated, "I Believe"

Communication with a deaf-blind person is very different
from communication with a person who is deaf. It can be
different in every country as well. There are a number of
different communication systems used by people who are
deaf-blind depending on their level of disability.
Deaf people who have tunnel vision, or a narrow field of
vision, require “Visual Frame Signing”. The hands
communicating are kept near the upper body and face so they
can be seen and understood.
People who have no vision use tactile sign language; the
hands of the deaf-blind are placed over the hands of the
person signing, feeling the hand shape, position and
movement. Depending on the level of education, words
can be spelled out letter by letter and felt by the person
who is deaf-blind. Also, letters can be traced onto the
palm of the deaf-blind person's hand, using block
capitals and as few strokes to make it easier to feel.
Pastor Francisco A, Florez (deaf), who now serves with the Dramatized Visual Bible Productions Team, was informed by a friend that he can look straight ahead and see others To his right and left communicating with their hands. Francisco aware that his eyesight was perfectly normal accused his friend of lying!
Soon Francisco learned from others that they too could look straight ahead and see to their left an right, and that is when he first became aware that he had tunnel vision
|
Insight: Read the Scriptures through the hole of a roll of paper tows and you will experience Francisco's type of tunnel vision.

How then shall they

And how shall they preach, except they be sent?..." Romans 10:14 & 15

Upon receiving pictures of our nationals and missionaries in
Colombia South America from my dad "Missionary Bernie
Hale", I am blessed to learn of our Mission's effort to reach
both deaf & blind. I'm pleased To share with you the
following pictures and information. May you too be blessed.
“Suroe” a young man who is both deaf and blind was
brought to the mission by “Fredy Martinez”. Fredy is deaf
but not blind. Fredy found Suroe living with his mother that
he cares for in a very poor section on the mountainside of
Bogotá.
We learned that before Suroe became blind, as a child he
was one among many deaf children who attended our Mission
School in Bogotá. In the language development class, Suroe
learned to communicate in the manual language "Dactylology/
Sign-language". For reason unknown to the teachers & Dr.
Hale, Suroe's and his parents disappeared until Fredy recently
found him as an adult and now blind.
For survival Suroe makes & sells homemade candy on the
street corners. Although surrounded by thousands of people
everyday, he is very much isolated from the world around
him. He sees no one and hears no one, his hearing and vision
impairment create challenges for him everyday.
Since the day he left the mission school as a child, for most of
his life in the vacuum of silence and blind he was lost with no
one to share with him a deeper understanding of what Jesus
Christ taught... that is until Fredy found him!
The deaf national mission leaders and missionaries have a
caring attitude with a warn welcoming acceptance. This is
love, something many deaf-blind including the deaf individuals
do not receive from the majority of the hearing society,
mostly due to the communication gap.
Suroe is just one of many deaf-blind individuals. So far, we
have had four deaf-blind individuals attend the mission
services. Fredy has located several more who are deaf-blind.
Fredy has requested prayer for this special
mission outreach To have a large van that will
assist to transport the deaf-blind so they too
can attend the mission services regularly. To lead
the deaf-blind across town especially those who have never
gone beyond the boundary of their home is too great a
challenge for Fredy and others.
Daisy Franco” wife of one of our mission's
deaf pastors, prays in her language
"Dactylology (sign language).
The prayer is for wisdom and partners to
financially support this meaningful
mission outreach to the deaf-blind.
These special people need to receive the Word of God
in their own language. Communicating with them
must be on a one to one basis, especially for those
who have no hearing nor vision.
Through the sense of touch as the Holy Scriptures are
trans-lated, the deaf-blind light up with understand-
ing. They smile as they learn that God made them and
all that He makes is perfectly made and special to
Him!
Fredy (deaf) shares his desire to reach the deaf-blind
in that they too may come to know Jesus Christ.
After many years of seeking God’s direction... Fredy
has finally found the area where he loves to serve and
that is among the deaf-blind children and adults.
Through manual communication Suroe understood
that Jesus loves him and that he is not alone. As he
was hugged by the other deaf in the mission, it
quickly became apparent that he had never received
this kind of affection. Tears streamed as he expressed
comfort and joy.
Suroe and others have returned to the mission
desiring more of the Word of God...and with Fredy we
are there To share with him and many others because
you have made it possible through your prayer and
financial support.
As we expand with this very special and unique
missionary service, pray that we increase with more
faithful financial contributors.
Thank you, on behalf of the deaf children and deaf
adults, nationals deaf leaders and the missionaries,
- Eldeny
